{"id":44,"date":"2012-03-16T16:16:20","date_gmt":"2012-03-17T00:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vspherestorage.com\/?p=44"},"modified":"2012-03-16T18:42:48","modified_gmt":"2012-03-17T02:42:48","slug":"vsphere-5-0-update-1-introduces-a-tool-to-manually-reclaim-deleted-blocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vspherestorage.com\/?p=44","title":{"rendered":"vSphere 5.0 Update 1 introduces a tool to manually reclaim deleted blocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With today&#8217;s release of VMware vSphere 5.0 Update 1, included is an update to vmkfstools that enables administrators to manually reclaim deleted blocks on\u00a0thin provisioned LUNs\u00a0on VAAI capable storage arrays.<\/p>\n<p>The new flag added to vmkfstools is &#8220;-y&#8221; and takes the percentage of the deleted blocks to reclaim as an argument.<\/p>\n<p>You need to cd into the VMFS volume with the deleted blocks before you run the command.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p><em># cd \/vmfs\/volumes\/MyThinVol<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em># vmkfstools -y 70<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This will reclaim 70% or the deleted blocks. Note that this works even though the UNMAP Primitive was disabled when you installed Update 1. It is time consuming though.
